Fiction FAQ

Fiction Submissions

What is fiction work?

Fiction is creative work based on characters, events, and/or locations that are imaginary. It is a story with characters, events, plot, and/or location that the author created.

How many pieces can I submit?

There is currently no limit to the number of submissions per person. However, each piece must be submitted separately with its own form. Each piece will be evaluated individually.

What themes can I submit?

Any theme! As long as it is a work of fiction and is 100% yours, you can submit it. Check out our fiction submissions guidelines for more details. No fan fiction.

Are there submission guidelines for my written work?

Yes, submissions must be:

  •  written in Times New Roman 12-point font

  •  double-spaced

  •  submitted as a Word or PDF document

  • between 500 and 4,000 words in length

When will I know if my submission was accepted or not?

You can expect a response from us at most a month after submission.

Fiction review team

What is expected of me as a member of the fiction review team?

Once we receive a submission, we read it and form our initial impressions on it by ourselves. The fiction review team typically meets every other week (time changes every semester based on majority availability). In these meetings, we share our likes and dislikes, discuss the piece’s strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately decide if we will accept the piece or not.

How much time/work do I have to commit as a member of the fiction review team?

Everything requires some input of time and effort. Currently,  we meet for two hours every other week, with some meetings lasting less, depending on workload. Outside of that, you will be required to read submissions at your own pace, and vote when necessary.

How can I join the fiction review team?

If you are a UNLV undergraduate, send us an email saying you would like to join the Beyond Thought team. You can attend a meeting, and if you think this journal is a good fit for you, just let us know, and you're in! You can either remain a general member, or you can join a particular team(s). I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS. HOW DO I GET IN CONTACT WITH THE FICTION TEAM?

Please feel free to contact us anytime with questions here.
